K-12 Presidents’ Council accomplishes much

RICHMOND - The K-12 Presidents’ Council met last week in Richmond. CUPE BC President Paul Faoro spoke about the current political landscape in B.C. with the swearing in of Premier John Horgan and an NDP minority government. He encouraged presidents to read the 2017 Confidence and Supply Agreement between the BC Green Caucus and the BC New Democrat Caucus, a comprehensive document that talks about government goals and gives a roadmap for the next 4 years.

BURNABY – CUPE EAs are invited to participate in a survey by Kamelia Dousti-Stee, a Masters of Education student at Vancouver Island University, who is working on her thesis.  She is studying how teachers and educational assistants see consultation and collaboration in their everyday work.  Dousti-Stee is hoping to discover what is working and what additional supports are needed to improve and cultivate the relationship of EAs and teachers.

CUPE Local 606 calls on Board to amend budget

NANAIMO –CUPE 606 President Rob Zver today called on the School District 68 (Nanaimo-Ladysmith) Board to amend its budget and properly fund education support services. Despite having a surplus of $1.7 million for 2015, the Board recently passed a budget that calls for large cuts to the facilities department including layoffs for caretakers, carpenters, electricians, maintenance and grounds workers.

If the agreement is ratified by K–12 Presidents’ Council members on June 16, it will form the basis of local agreements between your Local and school board. CUPE members will vote on this provincial package after their Local’s bargaining has concluded with its school board.
