RICHMOND – A big step towards achieving collective agreements in BC’s 60 School Districts has been taken, with CUPE BC K-12 locals voting to recommend a tentative Provincial Framework Agreement to the province’s education workers.

RICHMOND—The Canadian Union of Public Employees has reached a tentative Provincial Framework Agreement with the BC Public Schools Employers’ Association (BCPSEA). The Framework Agreement was unanimously endorsed by the CUPE BC K-12 Provincial Bargaining Sub-Committee and will be recommended to the CUPE BC K-12 Presidents’ Council for endorsement.

In a letter to all members, the BC Teachers Federation has outlined its intention to support CUPE BC education workers in the coming weeks, which means respecting their picket lines in an eventual job action. This pledge is the latest demonstration of a long-standing relationship of solidarity between the two unions, who work together to keep our public education system high quality, safe and inclusive. By standing together, we will be stronger and have a better chance of convincing government that they need to take a fair and reasonable approach to bargaining.

Government must drop concession demands or face strike
BURNABY—Bargaining dates set for next week between CUPE’s K-12 bargaining committee and the provincial government are crucial to achieving a fair and reasonable contract settlement, but if the BC Liberal government doesn’t drop its demands for contract concessions, CUPE members will have no choice but to stage a full-scale province-wide strike, CUPE BC President Mark Hancock said today.

VANCOUVER - The evening of September 10th, CUPE BC K-12 presidents met by conference call and heard a detailed report from the provincial table. The discussions show that local leadership is solidly behind the provincial Presidents’ Council Bargaining Sub-committee.

BURNABY—Provincial-level bargaining for CUPE education members will resume on September 4. Previous talks broke off on August 9 when it became clear that the employer was not prepared for bargaining. The new dates for bargaining in early September demonstrate that the CUPE bargaining sub-committee is willing to do whatever we can to avoid a disruption in classes this fall.

BURNABY—Despite assurances that the provincial government was prepared to bargain with CUPE education workers in August, negotiations have broken off indefinitely. After meeting for two and a half days last week, it became obvious talks couldn’t go any further.

VANCOUVER—CUPE is eager to get back to the bargaining table to reach a fair and reasonable settlement. Tentative dates have been scheduled for the second week in August and CUPE representatives emphasize that a fully-funded wage increase is the solution to ending the bargaining impasse.

BURNABY—After the first week of summer vacation for students, education workers across the province are resolved to make sure BC schools are clean, safe, and inclusive. The 27,000 CUPE education workers have voted to strike in almost all of the 57 K-12 Locals, in 53 school districts.

BURNABY – More than 100 members of CUPE 379 launched a day of strike actions today with a study session at their maintenance yard. They are being joined by CUPE K-12 colleagues in Vancouver, New West, Richmond, Delta and Surrey. All are activating their strike mandates, voted on after the breakdown of talks with local school boards. Talks at the provincial bargaining table broke down in April with virtually no progress made towards a new contract.
